Football: The Lins-Redell connection
For 30 years, Bill Redell and Tim Lins have been helping each other. Now they face off for what could be a final time on Friday when Westlake Village Oaks Christian plays at Moorpark.
Redell was an assistant coach at Cal Lutheran in 1980. Lins was an NAIA All-American tight end at Cal Lutheran.
"He got a skinny, slow tight end a pro tryout," Lins said.
Redell called pro coach Sid Gillman recommending Lins. Eventually, Lins became an assistant coach at Encino Crespi under Redell and succeeded him as head coach. Now Redell could be in his final season at Oaks Christian while Lins is head coach at Moorpark.
Lins, though, is not so sure about Redell's retirement plans.
"It started in 1989, how it was going to be his last year," Lins said.
Redell is in Colorado Springs, Colo., Thursday for the retirement ceremony from the Air Force for his oldest son, Randy, a former Crespi quarterback who is joining the private sector after rising to Lieutenant Colonel and being an F-16 pilot.

There's more than one connection:
John Kidder, the offensive coordinator for Moorpark, played for Redell in his first year as head coach at Crespi in 1982.
Kidder went on to be a three year starter at UCLA, blocking for Troy Aikman, and earning three Rose Bowl rings.
