Football: Rio Ruiz has a night to remember

One day, when Rio Ruiz is playing in the major leagues, he’s going to look back on Friday night with pride and a smile.
The junior quarterback from La Puente Bishop Amat whose future is in baseball gained plenty of satisfaction in his stubbornness to remain a two-sport athlete by completing 22 of 24 passes for 346 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-7 victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
The only bad part is that Bishop Amat (9-0) has to take this week off because it is idle. If the Lancers didn’t have a week off, I’d pick them to beat Mission Hills Alemany (8-0) in their Serra League finale scheduled for Nov. 12 at Alemany.
Regardless, Ruiz has done what all great athletes do _ they improve. It’s his first season as a starting quarterback, and from the first game through the ninth game, he has worked hard to master the position just like he does at shortstop in baseball.
And for that, he deserves praise and respect.
