This is the week we’ll get to figure out if there’s going to be real competition in the Trinity League.

Santa Margarita, off to a 2-0 league start under first-year Coach Harry Welch, travels to Bellflower St. John Bosco (0-2), which has played well but lost to Santa Ana Mater Dei and Anaheim Servite.

Also on Friday night is the Mater Dei-Servite showdown at Angel Stadium. The winner will become the Trinity favorite.

In many ways, the Santa Margarita-St. John Bosco game is the most important Trinity matchup of the week. Santa Margarita can virtually clinch a playoff spot with a victory, then focus on its final two games, Servite and Mater Dei.

St. John Bosco has picked up moral victories the last two weeks but that will mean nothing if it can’t make the playoffs, so the Braves are in must-win territory.

‘We’ve closed the gap but couldn’t get over the hump,’ Coach Jason Negro said. ‘We’ve talked to the kids that every game is a playoff game from now on.’
