A phone call placed to the City Section athletics office Monday morning got a strange response: No one is there.

Well, there was one person, the secretary. All the other full-time workers, including Commissioner Barbara Fiege, were gone, assigned to individual schools to provide support on the first day of school.

Fiege said it is not because of a lack of teachers and administrators but as a service for schools that need extra help.
