Football: Mesa gets attention after 365-yard rushing effort

A 365-yard, five-touchdown rushing performance by senior Jonathan Mesa from Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary last week against Montebello Schurr is the best rushing effort in the state after two weeks of the football season.

Mesa played receiver most of last season, but in the final game, he rushed for more than 200 yards against Los Angeles Verbum Dei.

He's a 5-foot-9, 155-pound tailback who's a triple jumper and participant on the school's track relay teams.

"This is definitely not a fluke," Coach Kim Taylor said.

He also has a 4.1 grade-point average.

The Truth is a Virus

Fan of football and bobcat get a life.
Its sad to see that a couple of haters would try to downplay this kids accomplishments on the football field. 365 Yards and 5 touchdowns. Schurr may be down this year as oppose to other years, but when it comes down to it, the kid did it and he did it with ease.

Mesa ran for 4 touchdowns and 205 yards against Bell Gardens and has a total of 976 yards and 16 touchdowns this year so far.

Mesa may not be the prototypical D-1 prospect, but there will be a few schools who will offer him a a scholoraship, he does have a 4.1 G.P.A. in a college prepartory school and that in itself is not easy.

Fan of football

The kid Mesa has a 4.1 at Cantwell.

Bobcat

I think Cantwell PLAYS ALHAMBRA THUNDERBIRDS NEXT. hE WILL GET ANOTHE 300 YRDS.

Fan of football: Get a grip man, and stop being so dismissive of the young man's acc0mplishment. I don't care what division it took place in, it was still a superlative effort. If that was your son, or a relative of yours, I bet you would be one proud dad, or family member.

Fan of football!! There are no excuses you play with what you have and move on. Its easy when you have a bunch of superstars and win easily. A coach and a team is made when you are not as talented, but bring out the best in every young man. Don't discount what any athlete has done, its not his fault if a team comes in short or whatever. You probably never gained that many yards in all your life. Don't hate..

This is a wonderful job done by a hardworking athlete! I also commend him for having a 4.1 GPA. This individual exemplifies truly what a student athlete is about.

It doesn't matter what school they play, the fact is he rushed for 365 yards. Enough Said! Great Job Mesa!

Fan

Get off the kids back. 365 yards against any opponent is great!
Maybe he's not a d-1 prospect but who is? Less than 10% of all high school athletes will receive an athletic scholarship!
He has a 4.1 GPA, so we know he's going to be successful after high school.

Bobcat

Cantwell Sacred Heart, enough said you played who Schurr? Div 8 enough said.

Fan of football

That is a fluke. Schurr was way down having graduated alot of players. Also, look who Cantwell plays they are all weak school's.
