A 365-yard, five-touchdown rushing performance by senior Jonathan Mesa from Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary last week against Montebello Schurr is the best rushing effort in the state after two weeks of the football season.

Mesa played receiver most of last season, but in the final game, he rushed for more than 200 yards against Los Angeles Verbum Dei.

He’s a 5-foot-9, 155-pound tailback who’s a triple jumper and participant on the school’s track relay teams.

‘This is definitely not a fluke,’ Coach Kim Taylor said.

He also has a 4.1 grade-point average.
