It’s the second week of the season, and the 10-team Marmonte League will be taking center stage this coming weekend with two titanic opening clashes: Thousand Oaks vs. Westlake Village Westlake on Thursday at Westlake and Westlake Village Oaks Christian vs. Ventura St. Bonaventure on Friday at Ventura High.

There was a reason all four schools were working so hard in summer passing tournaments. The coaches knew they had to have their teams ready to play from the opening snap of the opening game because league play begins so early.

Of the four teams, St. Bonaventure came through with the biggest opening victory, 32-7 over Long Beach Poly.

‘My God,’ was the reaction of Oaks Christian Coach Bill Redell after watching the Seraphs dominate Poly.

‘Wow’ was my reaction to the performance of junior quarterback Marc Evans. I want to revise my preseason list of top quarterbacks and put him on the list. He was accurate, poised and made great decisions. If he does that the rest of the season, St. Bonaventure will be playing in a state bowl game.

Of course, the Marmonte League is going to be similar to the Trinity League _ a weekly grind with great games and little time to celebrate or lick wounds.

Fans are going to appreciate the high quality of football. And sportswriters are going to have lots of fun trying to figure out which team will emerge as champion.
