Football: Long Beach Poly is loaded with receivers

There was a specific reason Long Beach Poly took to the air last week in its 42-28 win over Bakersfield. Coach Raul Lara has concluded that the receiver position is deep and talented. And, as we've learned with Poly, that means he has receivers capable of playing in college and beyond.

Richard Smith, a junior, did his DeSean Jackson impersonation, catching three passes for 141 yards, all for touchdowns. But there's plenty of others, such as juniors Randall Goforth and Josiah Blandin, plus seniors Gregory Hayes and Donald Byrd, not to mention tight end Earnest Pettway. And remember, ex-Poly players Jackson and Marcedes Lewis aren't just average NFL players. They're impact guys.

So the Jackrabbits intend to test the defensive secondary of lots of teams this season, including Ventura St. Bonaventure on Friday night at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

Yes, all these young receivers are exceptional. Quarterback Chaiyse Hales appears to be just what we've needed...a confident and able signal caller. This group is gonna be really hard to contain, add a nice running game and this could be a really special year for the Jackrabbits!

Gotta say though, not real happy the way the DL looked against Bakersfield. Coach Turley is gonna have to put a couple of the OL on the DL cause the current DL isn't very big. Quickness means nothing if you're getting pushed around! The more 3 and outs we get, the more points this team is gonna score!
