Football: It’s the final season for Coach Jeff Engilman

Even though some people are calling him the ‘Brett Favre of high school coaching,’ meaning they don’t believe he’s ever going to retire, Arleta Coach Jeff Engilman says, ‘This is definitely my last year.’
He has coached for 36 years, starting as a Class B coach at his alma mater, Sun Valley Poly, then winning four City titles at Manual Arts and Sylmar, before starting the Arleta program from scratch in 2006.
He retired from coaching after the 2003 season, then was back a year later coaching the freshman team at Valencia West Ranch before starting the Arleta program from scratch.
He turns 60 in October and insists this will be his final season that begins on Saturday.
He has been known for turning red and yelling at players, but he also has brought out the best in many. He has no regrets, either.
‘Thirty-six years is enough for me,’ he said.
