Sun Valley Poly’s double-wing offense can put a defense to sleep. Its capable of running off play after play, and as soon as the defense loses focus, touchdown.

The Parrots led only, 13-7, at halftime against Franklin on Saturday, then ran off 28 consecutive points to win, 41-14. Whether it was the heat or maintaining focus, Franklin wilted.

The best player I saw was 6-foot-3 tight end-linebacker Erick Martinez from Poly. He has deceiving speed, and his presence gives the Parrots an option if they get tired running the ball.

All-City running back Kevin Ervin got lots of carries but didn’t break off any long gainers. That should come down the road.

The City Section Division II competition is looking pretty even. Panorama (2-0) could be a surprise, led by running back Malcolm Thomas, who had 178 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-19 victory over Chatsworth.

Roosevelt came away with an impressive 26-7 win over Wilson, and Arleta’s 17-14 win over Marshall sends the message that Coach Jeff Engilman isn’t taking it easy in his final season. And don’t forget Woodland Hills El Camino Real, which should get better as the season progresses.
