In his 26th year as coach at Los Angeles Dorsey, Paul Knox has shown he can change with the times and change with his personnel.

That’s why he has no trouble embracing the pass even though Dorsey has been known for its outstanding tailbacks. With senior quarterback Joseph Gray and top receivers in Marvin Hall, Jaydon Mickens and Michael Robert, the Dons are taking to the air in big ways.

Gray’s school-record 359 yards passing Thursday night in a 37-24 victory over Woodland Hills Taft might be just the start of a season of records in the passing department. And that’s surprising to some.

Gray remembers showing up after transferring from Inglewood and thinking the Dons’ strategy was, ‘We’re going to pound it.’

But Knox recognized the Dons (2-0) had the talent to change, and passing became the offensive focus.

‘This was a natural thing for us to do,’ Knox said.

It’s going to make for an interesting Coliseum League. Locke won its opener, 30-7, over San Fernando, with Tony Bell scoring three touchdowns and rushing for more than 100 yards. Crenshaw remains the favorite. Add Dorsey, and it’s going to be a competitive race.

And how about the Marine League, where Carson (2-0), Narbonne (1-0) and San Pedro (1-0) have all opened impressively. City Section football is looking quite competitive at the moment.
