For the second consecutive season, Carson has knocked off Santa Ana Mater Dei. This time, it was a dominating performance even though the Colts won, 14-10, Saturday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

Carson’s defense, led by stocky nose tackle Justin Smith, sacked Mater Dei quarterback Max Wittek four times and held him to 62 yards passing. Mater Dei receiver Victor Blackwell left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

The Colts, winning in the debut of new Coach Elijah Asante, sealed the victory when Tracy Harris recovered a Mater Dei fumble on the Carson 20 with 1:48 left.

Carson scored on its opening series, driving 80 yards, with Myles Johnson running 11 yards for a touchdown. Mater Dei tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter on a 76-yard interception return for a touchdown by Glen Raphael.

But Carson’s Dion Willis then returned the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 advantage.

Quarterback Justin Alo completed 11 of 22 passes for 117 yards and also rushed for 38 yards in 10 carries for a Carson team that looks every bit as if it’s going to be a City Section Division I title contender.
