How time flies by. Troy Thomas is entering his sixth year as football coach at Anaheim Servite. Once again, he’ll lay low, allow the more publicized schools in Orange County take the spotlight, then come playoff time, the Friars will be right there challenging for attention and a trophy.

That’s how Thomas likes it. He wants to challenge his players to compete against the best, and when they prove themselves, their actions speak for themselves.

Servite is the defending Pac-5 Division champion, and so far in early training camp, Thomas said he likes what he sees.

Junior Cody Pittman is the new quarterback, having to replace the irreplaceable Cody Fajardo. Of course, the key to Pittman being successful is having a good supporting cast.

Thomas has helped the offense by moving top college prospect Troy Niklas from tight end to offensive tackle. ‘He looks real good,’ Thomas said of the versatile Niklas.

Servite had lots of outstanding sophomores contribute on varsity last season, and that’s why the Friars figure to be in position to make another title run. Thomas seems confident, which is all I need to know to conclude that Servite will be the team everyone will have to beat come December to win a title.
