Los Angeles Garfield has a tough season opener on Sept. 3 against Southern Section power La Puente Bishop Amat at East Los Angeles College, but Coach Lorenzo Hernandez has been thrilled with the competition going on between his standout defensive end, Moses Saucedo, and an improving offensive lineman, Hasiel Santoyo.

‘I had to yell at him, ‘Get off the quarterback,’’ Hernandez said of Saucedo. ‘He runs with an unstoppable motor.’

As far as the 6-foot-2, 265-pound Santoyo, Hernandez said, ‘That kid is mean.’

Santoyo keeps asking to face Saucedo in practice.

‘Santoyo wants Saucedo,’ Hernandez said.

Hernandez said about Bishop Amat, ‘Sometimes we question why did we do it, but the challenge is there.’

He expects a good crowd turnout since Garfield and Bishop Amat have strong fan interest.
