Football: Edison QB declared ineligible by CIF
The Southern Section has declared junior quarterback Chase Favreau from Huntington Beach Edison ineligible for this season, ruling his transfer from Santa Ana Mater Dei was athletically motivated.
Edison already lost its No. 1 tailback to academic ineligibility.
"We're pretty much in shock," Coach Dave White said.
Favreau has been attending Edison since January but the school apparently didn't submit transfer paperwork until recently, resulting in the ruling so close to the start of the season.
White said the lack of the consistency in how the Southern Section decides whether a student moved for athletic reasons concerns him.
Thom Simmons, a spokesman for the Southern Section, said, "You have to have credible evidence that they're an athletically motivated transfer."
Edison officials are expected to meet with Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton next week in an attempt to reverse the ruling. Favreau is expected to appeal the decision to a CIF panel.
In other transfer news, Santa Ana Mater Dei has approved the transfer of junior basketball standout Xavier Johnson from Temecula Chaparral via a valid change of residence, but it will be up to the Southern Section to decide if Johnson's transfer was athletically motivated.
-- Eric Sondheimer

What a joke. CIF SS ruling sounds like something the white house would have done.
Doesn't everyone go to Mater Dei for athletic reasons? Or is everyone just a good catholic?
CIF SS making a horrible decision. Apparently the one transfer every 10 years to Edison draws suspicion and investigations, but the 15 per season to Mater Dei are for ..... religious or educational purposes, it surely isn't location.

Robert,
Ahem...you're the one who looks bad by making a personal attack on Sondheimer.
Obviously you have not read the prep sections here much as Eric as well as the staff here has written more than enough articles on MD over the years and none of them defamatory in any sense. It's too bad the rest of the LA Times staff can leave their biases behind and just report the news.

Why is that the private schools have no problems taking in transfer from the public schools? But kids trying to transfer in to a public school are subject to investigations? Let the kid's play where they want.
Who care's if it's "athletically motivated". Of course it is, these kid's are trying to get exposure to get into a good college. What is wrong with that? Your going to tell me that all the kids that go to private schools actually live that schools area? I doubt it. There can't be a double standard when it comes to transfers.

It looks like X. Johnson was already approved by CIF via there website. I know shortenheimer likes to make MD try and look bad but at least practice fair reporting.
