Football: Lakewood wins Santa Fe tournament

Lakewood, behind quarterback Tyler Schultz, defeated Los Angeles Loyola in the championship game of the Santa Fe passing tournament.

Schultz’s development is great news for the Lancers, who are loaded in many other areas.

Junior receivers Darius Powe and Malik Gilmore were singled out by Coach Thadd MacNeal for their performance, along with linebacker Ryan Cummings and defensive back Rashad Wadood.

San Clemente had a strong showing in the Santa Fe tournament, going 7-1 with wins over Encino Crespi and Harbar City Narbonne.

In the Oxnard Rio Mesa tournament, Thousand Oaks and Ventura Buena each went 5-0.

In the Valley College tournament, Mission Hills Alemany and Newhall Hart tied in the championship game of the Gold Division made up of the top eight teams. Alemany is coached by Dean Herrington, while his older brother, Mike, coaches Hart.

In the five-team Crenshaw tournament, South East defeated the host Cougars in the final, with defensive back-running back Robert Lewis earning MVP honors.

In the Mission Viejo tournament, the host Diablos defeated Upland in the finals and also won the lineman competition. Quarterback Alex Bridgford and receiver Bryan Keller were the offensive standouts.
