Gardena Serra, 15-0 last season, had its first summer passing competition Monday, and receiver-defensive back George Farmer made it clear he’s ready to take over for USC freshman Robert Woods as the Cavaliers’ leader and big man on campus.

He is a man among boys, but the Cavaliers have so many potential weapons that it’s going to be difficult for opponents to simply focus on stopping Farmer.

Quarterback Conner Preston, an SMU commit, is smart, effective and knows which receivers to throw to. Raymond Ford, a transfer from L.A. Jordan, should step in as a standout cornerback. The Cavaliers’ defense wasn’t as good as their offense when facing Carson and North Torrance on Monday, but it’s early.

Serra moves to the Mission League this fall and will play in state Division II. It will be a big surprise if they don’t end up next December playing for the Division II title at The Home Depot Center in Carson.

Serra is playing in Oregon on Thursday and Friday in a Nike passing competition.
