The start of the VIBL playoffs produced a pitching matchup Thursday between two of the top juniors in the San Fernando Valley. Left-hander Max Fried from Van Nuys Montclair Prep took the mound against right-hander Lucas Giolito from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

UCLA Coach John Savage, plus recruiters from Arizona and Pepperdine, came out to watch. Giolito left the game after three innings with a 4-2 lead. But Fried, after giving up four runs in the first inning on some infield grounders and an error, looked terrific. He has one of the best curveballs around.

Both pitchers are going to have lots of options for college or beyond. Giolito was clocked throwing a 92 mph fastball. Fried hit 88 mph.

Harvard-Westlake won, 5-2. Harvard-Westlake will face Mission Hills Alemany on Saturday at Alemany. Alemany defeated Reseda Cleveland, 5-2.

In another VIBL opener, Jerry Barajas of Woodland Hills Taft threw a no-hitter to lead the Toreadors past Granada Hills Kennedy, 2-0. He walked two and faced the minimum 21 batters.
