Football: Richard Sherman graduates from Stanford

If there's a role model to follow for high school athletes in Compton it has to be Richard Sherman, the former Compton Dominguez defensive back who went through graduation ceremonies at Stanford last week.

He's going to return for a fifth year of football at Stanford and pursue a master's degree.

He has shown what can happen when you combine athletic and academic excellence.

I can't began to tell you how many times I have had this conversation with kids who have received a scholarship and are getting ready to start their Freshman year of college. My advice has been that they must make the scholarship work for them. I explain that no matter what, these kids for better or for worse are a commodity to these programs. Ideally if they red shirt the first year as most do, they should use the red shirt year to load up on classes and use the resources that the colleges provide to their student-athletes. This keeps you on schedule to graduate in four years and if the coach want's you to play for the program in year 5, that student athlete has leverage and can say since I have already graduated, what about entry into one of the school's graduate programs. That student athlete can again use their athletic ability and remaining eligibility to not only play their sport at the collegiate level but also to get a year of grad school paid for. At least if you don't go to the next level regrading your sport, you will have not only your Bachelors , but will have the ability to get an advanced degree at a reduced cost. What does a year of Grad school cost?
