Former Sherman Oaks Notre Dame standout Mike Stanton of the Florida Marlins has the baseball world in an uproar over his physical skills.

Here’s a story from ESPN.com with the headline, ‘Marlins’ Stanton a ‘one in a million’ talent.’

To me, Stanton was a terrific high school player who everyone knew would get better once he focused strictly on baseball. He was so busy doing other sports, such as football and basketball, that it took away from baseball.

But playing three sports prepared him for the media onslaught he’s inheriting. And I’m still wondering if he ever learned how to make a free throw. For all the great skills he has, his free-throw shooting in basketball could never be mastered. And his ex-basketball teammates at Notre Dame will probably never let him forget it.
