Baseball: Griffin Murphy goes to Blue Jays at No. 61

Left-hander Griffin Murphy from Redlands East Valley was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays as the No. 61 pick on Tuesday in baseball’s amateur draft. Pomona Garey pitcher Vincent Velasquez went No. 58 to the Houston Astros.

Other second-round picks included pitcher Cody Buckel of Simi Valley Royal to the Rangers at No. 72, pitcher Rob Rasmussen of UCLA to the Marlins at No. 73 and pitcher Jack Thompson of Long Beach State to Tampa Bay at No. 66. New York Yankees took shortstop Angelo Gumbs from Torrance with final pick of second round.

UCLA pitcher Dan Klein went in the third round to the Orioles. Huntington Beach Marina third baseman Chad Lewis went to the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round.

In the fifth round, former Palisades pitcher Cole Cook from Pepperdine was chosen by the Indians, Upland pitcher Scott Frazier went to the Phillies and Hueneme pitcher Jesus Valdez went to the Angels.

In the sixth round, Glendora pitcher Adam Plutko went to the Astros and St. Paul pitcher Gabe Encinas went to the Yankees.
