In this era of specialization, we should all appreciate those high school athletes who find a way to excel in multiple sports.

One of those is Bryan Bennett, the quarterback from Encino Crespi headed to Oregon. If he did what most of his competitors are doing, he’d been just focusing on football year round.

But Bennett decided to join the basketball team and helped the Celts win a Southern Section championship as a spark off the bench, contributing an occasional spectacular dunk, rebounding and adding athleticism to the lineup.

And on Saturday, he qualified for the Southern Section track finals with a time of 40.11 in the 300 intermediate hurdles in Division 3.

So that’s one talented athlete enjoying his senior year of high school. Good for him and the others who take up the challenge of trying to compete in more than one sport at a high level.
