Next Monday and Wednesday, the City Section golf championships will be held at Wilson and Harding Golf Course, and don’t be surprised if Woodland Hills El Camino Real senior Giovanni Washington wins it all.

He has been one of the most consistent players for the Conquistadores this season, being the low medalist in nine of 10 matches, with four rounds under 70 and seven rounds under par.

He hits the ball off the tee as far as any golfer in the City Section, with nothing less than drives of 290 yards, leaving him usually just a wedge shot away from the green. The key to his play has been improved putting.

‘I’ve been working really hard,’ he said. ‘I knew my passion was going to pay off. Mentally, I knew I had to get stronger.’

His teammate, Daniel Slovis, won the City title last season, and Washington has been working diligently to prepare for the pressure of next week’s finals.

‘I told myself I want to try to do the best I can every round,’ he said.

The 6A League championships are this week, leading up to the finals.

‘What’s really been getting me to the low scores is taking advantage of my distance and to be within 100 yards of the green,’ he said.
