Baseball: 12 strikeouts for Kevin Torres

Kevin Torres of Birmingham is making a late-season run for City Section player of the year. He struck out 12 Wednesday as the Patriots knocked off Granada Hills Kennedy, 9-0, in a City Section Division I playoff opener.

Birmingham will play at El Camino Real on Friday. El Camino Real beat South East, 12-0, in five innings. Top-seeded Chatsworth defeated Harbor City Narbonne, 9-0. Aaron Brown hit a two-run home run. Christian Lopez and Steve Karkenny combined for the shutout.

Chatsworth will host Taft on Friday. Taft defeated Sylmar, 6-0, with Cody deSpain hitting a three-run home run. Arleta got a complete game from Javy Lopez (8-0) to defeat Granada Hills, 2-1. Arleta will play San Pedro at College of the Canyons. San Pedro beat San Fernando, 10-9, on a three-run home run from Ronnie Galosic in the bottom of the ninth.

Banning’s Jonathan Hernandez struck out nine in his team’s 3-0 victory over Reseda Cleveland.

In Division II, Fairfax defeated Van Nuys, 6-2. Fairfax will host Gardena, which beat L.A. Wilson, 3-2.
