With a little more than a month to go before the Southern Section swimming championships, Los Angeles Loyola has emerged as a strong contender for the Division I title with Capistrano Valley and Corona del Mar.

The Cubs were runner-up last season to Capistrano Valley.

Among their top returning swimmers are sophomore Fred Abramyan, who has a 21.58 clocking in the 50 freestyle; junior Colin Duffy; junior Ryan Cunningham, who won the 100 backstroke in a tri-meet against Capistrano Valley and Corona del Mar; senior Connor Sharpe, who swims in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and senior Spencer Lee, a title contender in the butterfly.

The championships are scheduled for May 11-15.
