Baseball: Lenny Diaz shuts out Sylmar, 5-0

Needing a strong pitching performance, Granada Hills Kennedy got it from senior Lenny Diaz, who threw a five-hitter in the Golden Cougars’ 5-0 Valley Mission League victory over Sylmar.

Kennedy improved to 9-11 overall and 4-2 in league. Sophomore Chris Mallon had two hits and two RBIs.

In the West Valley League, El Camino Real defeated Cleveland, 11-1, in six innings. Mitch Bluman picked up the pitching victory and went three for three. Sterling Rose also had three hits for El Camino Real (11-10, 6-0).

In the Foothill League, Newhall Hart got four hits from Nolan Simons to beat Saugus, 12-4. Coach Jim Ozella of Hart was ejected, which means he won’t be able to coach in the Indians’ (11-9, 5-4) next game. Valencia defeated Golden Valley, 7-2. James Bonds had a two-run home run for Valencia. West Ranch defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 7-1. Ryan Keller struck out six in a complete game.

In the Sunset League, UCLA-bound Eric Snyder hit a two-run home run and a three-run home run and Nic Hanson threw a complete game as Huntington Beach Edison (14-6, 8-1) defeated Huntington Beach Marina, 7-1. Fountain Valley defeated Los Alamitos, 11-4.

In the Olympic League, Van Nuys Montclair Prep defeated Cerritos Valley Christian, 21-4. Max Fried went four for four with four RBIs to lead a 20-hit attack. Nick Suniga added three hits for the Mounties (16-5, 6-0).

In the Mission League, La Canada St. Francis defeated North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 8-7. West Hills Chaminade (17-4, 6-2) hit four home runs in an 8-2 win over Los Angeles Loyola. Dylan Delaney hit two home runs and Michael Dingilian improved to 5-0 with a three-hitter. Brando Tessar and Mathew Troupe also homered.

In the Camino Real League, L.A. Cathedral (16-3, 8-1) defeated Mary Star, 8-5. Joe Gonzales pitched five shutout innings of relief. Jaime Figueroa and Sergio Luna had two hits apiece.
