BAKERSFIELD--St. Anthony could suffer the indignity of becoming the first team from Southern California to lose a state basketball championship this year.

Southern California boys’ and girls’ teams went a combined 4-0 against their Northern California counterparts on Friday, but the Saints trail Los Altos Hills Pinewood, 34-22, at halftime of the Division V championship.

Pinewood seems a step quicker and has mostly neutralized St. Anthony’s superior size. The Panthers have made four three-point baskets and have led by as many as 14 points.

Hailie Eackles has 10 points and Jenna McLoughlin and Miranda Seto seven apiece for Pinewood, which is shooting 52.2% to St. Anthony’s 28.1%. The Saints are sticking around in part because they have 10 more rebounds than the Panthers.

Jordan Jackson has seven points but has made only two of six shots for St. Anthony.
