Santa Monica will finally get to hang a banner in its gymnasium.

For the first time in the school’s history, the girls’ basketball team won a Southern Section championship game.

Second-seeded Santa Monica (26-6) won 69-63 in Division 1A against fourth-seeded Summit (25-6) tonight at Santa Ana Mater Dei.

After only scoring five points in the first half, Moriah Faulk exploded for Santa Monica for a team-high 19 points. Thea Lemberger added 16 points, 12 of which were scored in the first half, and Kristina Johnson had 14.

Summit was led by an unlikely hero, Ashley Weissman, who averaged only 9 points during the regular season. Tonight she scored a game-high 23 points, including five three-pointers. Summit star Adrianne Thomas was held to 12 points, and was scoreless in the second half.

The Vikings converted 19 of their 24 free throw attempts, while Summit was 10 for 20.

This was Summit’s first championship appearance since 2008.
