Tournament organizers for the National Classic next month in Orange County are seeking input from coaches about using wood bats during games in a proposal from Marin Catholic High in the wake of one of its players being put in a medically-induced coma after being struck in the head by a ball from an aluminum bat.

Regardless of the final decision, Marin Catholic intends to use wood bats in all of its games out of concern for safety and their teammate, Gunnar Sandberg, according to an e-mail tournament director Steve Gullotti sent to participating coaches.
