Baseball: Birmingham’s Torres throws no-hitter

Junior pitcher Kevin Torres threw a no-hitter and also hit a home run in Birmingham’s 6-0 nonleague win over Sylmar Tuesday at UCLA.

Torres struck out four and walked two to help Birmingham improve to 4-2. Manny Granillo also homered for the Patriots, and Pedro Santoyo had three runs batted in.

Montclair Prep (5-1, 1-0) defeated Campbell Hall, 10-4, in its Olympic League opener. Tony Rosales hit two home runs and had five RBIs. Max Fried added a home run and three RBIs and improved to 3-0 on the mound.

Taft defeated Arleta, 6-2. Sean Safko gave up three singles in the first inning, and that was it. Art Chavez, Cody deSpain and Jackson Trager each hit a home run for Taft (4-2).

Bellflower St. John Bosco improved to 5-1 with a 7-2 win over Torrance. Ivan Chavarria, Jerry Lopez and David Meza limited Torrance to seven hits. Taylor Sparks had two doubles.
