Football: David Sills is cool, calm and a 13-year-old

David Sills left the snow of Delaware to show up in the rain at the Rose Bowl on Saturday to participate among hundreds of quarterbacks trying to impress Steve Clarkson in his search for top players of the future.

Except Sills might have been the most well-known teenager in attendance ever since the 13-year-old seventh-grader announced he had committed to USC.

I don't know what kind of player he's going to become, but I am impressed at Sills' ability to handle the media attention. He was getting interviewed left and right and showing he can handle questions and scrutiny.

That's the first step toward being a quarterback, and he's on the right track. See for yourself in the interview below.

Brad Kaaya is going to Crespi H.S. in Encino CA. I went to school with him.

This is amazing.... I think this is perfectly fine if this is really what he wants to do with this life!

I hope Kaaya check's out Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. Great Academics and Brand new Facilities.

David Sills looks like a nice kid...seems committed..maybe he can do well, but there is a lot of ground to cover between 13 and college. There is an 8th grader that I hear is headed to one of the southern Cali powerhouse catholic schools--his last name is Kaaya. If you want to bet on a QB making it, this is the kid. He's about 170lbs and 6'3" already. I saw him torch some good competition in the PYFL.

The funniest and most ironic part of this whole article is the notice at the bootom to comment that says you have to be 13 years old to do so. Apparently the same rules apply for commiting to USC for football as they do to commenting on the LATime.com website. Good to know Los Angeles has its priorities straight again.

West Valley '81

Let's see if I have this straight. A pre or post pubescent kid plays well against other pre and post pubescent kids. It happens in every town, in every city and in every league, a kid has better aptitude than his peers.... I was at one of the "showcase" games this past winter where young Master Sills looked terrific. His team was playing two San Fernando valley private school teams, and as a parent of one of the kids on one of the teams, I can say without question, his opposing teams were made up of nearly 50% FIRST YEAR PLAYERS. Here's the tragedy in this whole Sills mess. Red Lion Christian Academy that supported the show and tell. Steve Clarkson, dressed in his white tux draped in purple boa, head adorned with white fedora. His father/coach that exploited his son and lastly, you Eric. Did the horse just run past you in the barn? At Northridge Little League is now forming a T-Ball all star team....oh wait, maybe my pregnant wife should get an application for Notre Dame High School class of 2029. What do you think, will you cover that in the paper?
