For those who keep thinking that Montebello’s success this season is a fluke or the result of easy scheduling, I hope you don’t have to play the Oilers, because they showed in their Southern Section Division 1AA opener Wednesday night they are going to be a factor before the games reach the Honda Center.

With Almont League MVP Andrew Torres scoring 18 points and 6-foot-11 junior Antonio Worthy contributing 12 blocks, Montebello improved to 28-1 with a 64-41 victory over Corona Santiago.

Montebello came out focused and never let the Sharks (13-15) into the game. Michael Carabes, a junior guard, made four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Point guard Marcos Mejia added 12 points.

Montebello showed off an outstanding man-to-man defense. Santiago didn’t reach double figures in any quarter until garbage time in the fourth.
