Boys' basketball: 1959 Verdugo Hills coach to make visit

Until this season, it was 51 years ago when Verdugo Hills last won a league title in boys' basketball, and the coach of that 1959 team, Si Korach, turned 91 this week.

Korach, who lives in Marina del Rey, plans to meet with the Dons' current coach, 33-year-old Jared Gibson, on Friday to discuss basketball and lots of other things.

Verdugo Hills, the East Valley League champion, opens the City Section Division III playoffs on Friday at home.

Korach later became head coach at Metropolitan College, a junior college that later merged with Trade Tech. He then spent several years as baseball coach at L.A. Valley College before finishing his career as an administrator at West L.A. College.
