The San Clemente girls hadn’t lost to Dana Hills since 1995. And San Clemente had not lost a league game since 2005.

All that changed when Dana Hills defeated San Clemente, 57-49, last night on San Clemente’s home court in the South Coast League opener for both teams.

The good news for the Tritons: They were 17 for 61 from the floor, and still almost won.

San Clemente has claimed 12 consecutive league championships, and Coach Mary Mulligan is far from discouraged.

‘We can lose a game and still win the league championship,’ Mulligan said.

She added, ‘It’s a huge wake-up call for the girls. They don’t quite get how much teams want to beat us because we’ve been on top for so long.’

Lauren Shute scored 18 for Dana Hills and Olivia Winokur had 13. USC-bound Cassie Harberts led San Clemente with 23 points.
