Quite a day for Ronald Powell.

The Rancho Verde defensive end caught a 23-yard touchdown pass, forced a fumble and returned a blocked extra point 100 yards on the way to becoming selected the most valuable player of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome.

Then, in the fourth quarter, Powell ended the suspense surrounding his college choice when he announced that he was committing to Florida instead of USC. And to top everything off, Powell’s West squad defeated the East, 30-14, on national television.

‘Honestly, both of them are great programs,’ Powell said of the Gators and Trojans. ‘I couldn’t have gone wrong with either program. I put it in God’s hands. That’s the best advice I ever got was to leave it to him.’

Fontana Kaiser linebacker Josh Shirley also had a moment in the spotlight, picking up a blocked field goal and racing 77 yards for a touchdown. Gardena Serra receiver Robert Woods caught two passes for 57 yards.

Though they lost out on Powell, the day wasn’t a total loss for the Trojans; they picked up a commitment from Corona safety Demetrius Wright.
