Boys’ basketball: McKnight ties state record for victories

Santa Ana Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight earned victory No. 843 in his career Friday night in the Monarchs’ 84-47 win over JSerra, tying McKnight with Mike Phelps as the winningest prep basketball coach in state history. Phelps coached at Alameda St. Joseph and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd.
McKnight is in position to break the record either on Monday in Springfield, Mass., or next Friday against Santa Margarita.
Keala King had 14 points for the Monarchs (15-1), and Tyler Lamb had 11 assists.
McKnight is 843-77 in a 28-year coaching career that has seen his teams win 19 Southern Section championships and seven state titles.
