January 12, 2010 | 10:10 pm

Theirs is a friendship born of hope.

Los Osos Coach David Smith and firefighter Richard "Chip" Smith met while undergoing chemotherapy for colorectal cancer. Smith is still coaching the Grizzlies this season despite his affliction.

A charity basketball tournament named Hoops for HOPE will be held in the men's honor Feb. 20 at Los Osos High to raise awareness and funds to help fight the disease. Teams from the Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Chino Valley and Upland fire depts. will participate in a three-game format.

Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and the first game will tip off an hour later. Tickets are a $10 donation and there will be a silent auction during the event. All proceeds will benefit the San Antonio Community Hospital Cancer Education Center in Upland and the City of Hope Cancer Research Hospital in Duarte.

Information concerning tickets and donations can be found at www.hoopsforhope.info.
