Girls’ Basketball: Mater Dei prevailed over Stockton St. Mary’s tonight at the TOC

Mater Dei proved tonight that it’s the best team in the nation.

The Santa Ana powerhouse took down top-ranked Stockton St. Mary’s, 66-60, in the elite Joe Smith division at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

The game between the two top-ranked teams in the nation caused a lot of chatter. The following game recap is composed from HoopGurlz live tweets.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 12 points to give the Monarchs a 26-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Mater Dei carried its lead through the second quarter, entering halftime with a 32-26 lead.

St. Mary’s went on a 8-2 run at the top of the third quarter, and tied the game at 36-all with just under five minutes left. St. Mary’s took the lead late in the third.

Mater Dei rallied back and took control of the game in the fourth quarter.

In other Nike TOC championship games:

Nicole Nesbit scored 17 points and Nicole Hung had 13 for Harvard-Westlake, which defeated Canyon Springs, 63-49, in the Gray division championship.

Brittany Oster converted a free throw with 14.4 seconds left to give Agoura a 62-61 win over Alemany in the John Anderson division championship.

LACES defeated El Camino Real, 58-51, in the Black division championship.
