Football: Woods and Powell among award finalists

Gardena Serra receiver Robert Woods and Rancho Verde linebacker Ronald Powell are among the seven finalists for the U.S. Army player of the year award, given to the top high school football player competing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 9 in San Antonio.

The other finalists are San Diego Mission Bay running back Dillon Baxter, St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson, Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes running back Marcus Lattimore, Hillside (Ill.) Proviso West receiver Kyle Prater and Stamford (Conn.) King & Low Heywood Thomas running back Silas Redd.

The seven finalists will embark on a media tour later this month to locales including Houston, New York City and Washington, D.C.
