Reader Phil Green of San Juan Capistrano e-mailed this morning in response to a Times story on the CIF bowl game format, voicing his displeasure with the way teams are selected for the state championship games.

Green wrote that the format ‘is like an NCAA tournament that gets to the final eight teams and then the politicos choose who will be in the championship game.’

Pretty much nailed it. Marie Ishida, the CIF’s executive director, said California was ‘just too large’ to have a full-blown playoff to crown a state champion, but Texas has found a way to do it and it’s probably time the CIF honchos follow suit.
