Football: Final week has lots of big games

November 7, 2009 |  8:51 am

The final week of the regular season presents the opportunity for lots of exciting moments leading up to the weekend release of playoff pairings.

There's the battle of the unbeaten Marmonte League teams on Friday night, Moorpark (9-0) at Westlake Village Westlake (9-0). Westlake's passing attack has been rolling through teams, but the Warriors haven't faced a defense as good as Moorpark.

There's the battle of the unbeaten Del Rey League teams, Los Angeles Cathedral (9-0) and Gardena Serra (8-0) at Serra. Cathedral put to rest any doubts about its ability with an impressive victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake. Quarterback Trevor Olson passed for 174 yards and has 2,502 yards and 28 touchdowns on the season.

There's the South Coast League showdown between host Mission Viejo (9-0) and surprising Dana Hills (8-1), which has to be one of the most improved teams in Southern California. I saw Dana Hills in its only loss to Huntington Beach Edison, and this is a legit team.

There's the Serra League title decider between Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (8-1) and host La Puente Bishop Amat (8-1). Notre Dame had better not lose because then there might be a three-way tie in the Serra League, resulting in coin flips galore.

City pairings will be decided on Saturday morning. Southern Section pairings come out Sunday afternoon.
