One long run by Malcolm Jones late in the second quarter tonight completely changed the complexion of Oaks Christian’s intersectional game against host Venice.

The Gondoliers had twice stopped the Lions on fourth downs and were trailing only 6-3 when Jones burst through the line, hurdled a defender and sprinted for a 60-yard touchdown that gave Oaks Christian a 13-3 advantage.

Venice Coach Angelo Gasca will have to try to rally his players like he did in 2007, when the Gondoliers trailed, 28-9, before pulling out a 41-35 victory over Oaks Christian.

Jones has 118 yards in 10 carries and quarterback Nick Montana has completed 10 of 16 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown for the Lions.

Venice quarterback Alfonso Medina has completed five of 13 passes for 77 yards. The Gondoliers had driven into Oaks Christian territory late in the second quarter when Medina overthrew a receiver on fourth down. Two plays later, Jones ran for the touchdown that gave the Lions a 10-point cushion.

Venice defensive back Mychael Tarr has broken up a couple of passes and linebacker Jonathan McNeal sacked Montana once.

Oaks Christian will get the ball to start the third quarter.
