Edward Acuna, a senior defensive tackle at Pomona Garey, is hospitalized in the intensive care unit of a Los Angeles area medical center after suffering an injury in the fourth quarter Friday night in a game against Montclair, Coach Leonard Powell said Monday.

Acuna came off the field after making a tackle, was not communicating and his condition deteriorated, Powell said. Paramedics began treating him at the game.

Powell said Acuna remains unconscious but is in stable condition.

‘We’re feeling good about the prognosis,’ he said.

A team meeting was held this morning in which players were told counselors are available.

On the same night, a Hollywood High freshman-sophomore player, Spencer Juarez, was injured during a game against West Adams and died the next day.
