From Aug. 1 to Sept. 15, the Southern Section office has processed a record 1,259 transfers, according to section spokesman Thom Simmons.

The breakdown: 670 transfers, 149 hardship requests, 76 foreign exchange and 364 valid change of residence. There will be dozens more confirmed transfers when winter and spring sport athletes fill out their paper work.

The office promises to process hardship requests within 20 days.

As for the reasons for the rise in transfers, two big ones could be the economy and the relatively new rule that allows one-time free transfers for sophomores-to-be.
