Westlake Village Oaks Christian’ 28-17 victory Friday over Mission Hills Alemany was defined by two factors.

1. Running back Malcolm Jones ran for 275 yards and three touchdowns off 37 carries. Though quarterback Nick Montana threw for 152 yards and one touchdown, it came on a 12-of-28 clip with one interception. Jones recovered a fumble from quarterback Vernon Adams, which then led to a 23-yard touchdown from Jones on the next drive for a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

2. Turnovers: Jones’ fumble recovery tells just part of the story. The Warriors tied the game, 7-7, thanks to a 23-yard touchdown pass from Adams to receiver Kevin Lenik with 2:08 left in the quarter two plays after Malcolm Marable intercepted a pass from Lions quarterback Montana. Alemany got on the board again thanks to defensive back Saladin McCullough forcing and recovering a fumble at Oaks Christian’s 13-yard line. Despite being within striking distance, the Warriors could only muster a field goal --a 22-yard attempt from Martin Meza -- to make it 14-10 with 2:45 remaining. The Warriors (0-1) tried to reduce the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Lions (1-0) linebacker Carlos Mendoza recovered a fumble left by Adams with 4:29 remaining.
