In looking over the scores from Friday night, the biggest surprise was the relatively new Los Angeles West Adams beating Wilmington Banning, 19-14, in the City Section.

Brad Ratcliff, who used to coach at North Hollywood, has built the West Adams program from scratch, and to knock off a Marine League team in his season opener speaks plenty.

‘We’re trying to make some noise,’ Ratcliff said.

Also, San Pedro’s new quarterback, Ronnie Galosic, was 11 of 14 for 136 yards in a 35-6 victory over Santee. When the Pirates can pass a little bit, they’re usually pretty good.

But I doubt anything is going to matter in the City Section other than Crenshaw going 14-0 after its 47-44 victory over Norco without DeAnthony Thomas.

The Cougars have knocked off two strong Southern Section teams in back to back games. Yes, their defense hasn’t been very good against the run, something Narbonne, Carson, Taft and Dorsey will try to exploit, but this is a team that is in position to run the table and control its own destiny, something rare for the City Section.
