Baseball: Westchester's Jacobs hits two home runs at Dodger Stadium

May 30, 2009 |  1:06 pm

Chris Jacobs, a 5-foot-9 senior shortstop at Westchester who played junior varsity last season after transferring from Covina, put on a memorable show today in the City Section Division II championship game at Dodger Stadium.

He hit a double that struck the right-field wall in the first inning. He hit a three-run home run into the left-field bullpen in the second inning. And he ended the game with a three-run walkoff home run into the left-field box seats in the fifth inning for an 11-1 five-inning victory over North Hills Monroe.

He's only the second player in City Section history to hit two home runs in a single game at Dodger Stadium.

"I think it was an unbelievable performance," Westchester Coach Seka Edwards said. "To play at that level on this stage is what dreams are made of for a senior. He's exceptional."

Said Jacobs: "It's very special. I'm excited."

Jacobs hit .500 with nine home runs during the regular season. Westchester (22-9), the No. 1 seed, became the first Division II champion. Monroe (11-15) was the fourth-place finisher from the Valley Mission League and seeded No. 15. Sophomore pitcher Robert Gsellman allowed two hits for Westchester.

Baseball: No hot dogs for the media at Dodger Stadium

May 30, 2009 | 12:05 pm

How bad have things gotten for the Los Angeles Unified School District? No Dodger Dogs or even bottled water for the media in the press box for today's City Section championship games.

Budget cutbacks are cited, but there are plenty of hot dogs and water for teachers and coaches with VIP hospitality passes making their way to the press box.

"How can I get prepared for the Nathan's contest when I can't get my usual allotment of hot dogs?" said Randy Rosenbloom, who's broadcasting the game for LA36.

Baseball: Tyler Matzek shows he's more than just a pitcher

May 30, 2009 |  8:48 am

The high school baseball world knows about Tyler Matzek, the pitcher. But the Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley senior also can be a formidable hitter, as demonstrated Friday when he contributed two home runs in Capistrano Valley's 11-0 Southern Section Division I quarterfinal victory over Huntington Beach Marina.

The semifinals are set. It will be Capistrano Valley taking on Riverside Poly at 4 p.m. at Blair Field in Long Beach. At 7 p.m. at the same site, Santa Ana Mater Dei will face Huntington Beach Edison.

Matzek is expected to pitch against Riverside Poly in what figures to be his final extensive pitching effort before the draft takes place on June 9.

Track: Carroll identifies top challengers in 100, 200

May 29, 2009 | 10:09 pm

Randall Carroll didn't seem broken up about his upset loss in the 200 meters to Tustin's Ameer Webb.

All that mattered, he said, was that he qualified for next week's state meet on a cool, windy night that was not ideal for sprinting.

Carroll won the 100 and will be favored in the 100 and 200 next week at the state meet at Clovis Buchanan High.

Asked to identify his top competitors in the 100, Carroll pointed to Fountain Valley's Kyle Middlebrooks, who finished second tonight in 10.68 seconds. Carroll said he was surprised by Middlebrooks' ability to quickly get out of the starting block. Carroll also mentioned Bishop Amat's Sheldon Price, who took third in 10.73, saying that his future UCLA football teammate has tremendously improved each week.

In the 200, Carroll singled out Crenshaw's DeAnthony Thomas, Woodland Hills Taft's D.J. Morgan and Santee's Tevin Carter, who won the City championship on Thursday. "He's tall and lanky and he runs a powerful race," Carroll said of Carter. "He'll be somewhat challenging."

Carroll said Webb could use his victory over Carroll as a confidence booster. Not that Carroll seems worried.

"Next week will be a different race," he said.

Track: Wyatt talks about pulling out of 200

May 29, 2009 | 10:01 pm

Two wins was enough for Reggie Wyatt.

The standout sprinter from La Sierra won the 400 and the 300 hurdles and had qualified to run in the 200 but decided that it was going to be a little ridiculous to compete in the latter event because it was being run almost immediately after the 300 hurdles. So he pulled out.

"I didn't want to push myself too hard," Wyatt said. "After the hurdles, I'm like, I'm done."

Wyatt ran a credible 36.88 in the 300 hurdles but said he wasn't gunning for the national record of 35.28 because of cool, windy conditions. Of course, he'll have an opportunity to break the mark next week at the state meet.

"It's cold," he said. "I'll wait for next week."
