One of the best parts about going to the Southern Section track and field championships is trying to identify the next top high school football players, and one athlete who stood out was junior Damani Wilson of Orange Lutheran.

He’s a running back who already possesses excellent speed, and he used the track season to get even faster. He’s also set to become the senior class president in the fall. He had some breakaway runs last season, and there’s no reason to think the long runs won’t become more plentiiful this fall.

Of course, Orange Lutheran likes to run the ball by committee, especially because it’s loaded at the position with the return of Garret Gilliland. However, one of its top players, Exavier Edwards, has transferred to Mission Viejo.

But I’ll make a prediction: Wilson is going to be one of the top running backs in Orange County in 2009.
