Tyler Matzek (10-1) was in dominating form Friday for Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, striking out six and allowing no hits in four scoreless innings against Long Beach Wilson. The Cougars started so well that they pulled Matzek in the fifth inning of an 8-4 first-round Southern Section Division I playoff victory.

He made only 38 pitches and will come back to start Tuesday’s second-round game against Orange Lutheran.

‘It’s probably the best I’ve felt this year,’ Matzek said.

Asked about being pulled, Matzek said, ‘I’d rather win CIF than get a no-hitter.’

Charles Pfirrmann hit a grand slam in the second inning to give No. 3-seeded Capistrano Valley (22-6) a 6-0 lead. Nolan Clark added a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Clark appeared to hit a two-run home run in the second inning, but a balk was called, nullifying the home run.
