Basketball: Locals could be lovin' it at McDonald's games

March 31, 2009 |  2:01 pm

They ought to hold the McDonald's All-American basketball games in Southern California more often considering the annual size of the contingent from the Southland. This year, the eight local players had to take a five-hour flight to Miami for the games that will held Wednesday at the Bank United Center.

Last year, the West boys' team had five local players. This year, the number is a still-hearty four: center Renardo Sidney of Fairfax, twin forwards Travis and David Wear of Mater Dei and guard Michael Snaer of Rancho Verde. The boys' game is at 5 p.m. PDT and will be televised by ESPN.

The girls' game also includes a healthy Southern California contingent of center Monique Oliver of Long Beach Poly, guard Eliza Pierre of Muir, forward Christina Marinacci of Foothill and forward Gennifer Brandon of Chatsworth. The girls' game is at 2:30 p.m. PDT and will be televised by ESPNU.

Water polo: Harvard-Westlake coach resigns

March 31, 2009 |  1:56 pm

Larry Felix, the water polo coach at North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, has resigned after four years to pursue other opportunities.

But the real news could come in a matter of weeks if former Harvard-Westlake Coach Rich Corso decides to return. He has been the women's coach at California, where his team is ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Baseball: A player to watch in 2010

March 31, 2009 | 11:33 am

Chris Leveque was a standout pitcher at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame during the 1990s, and now he's the coach of the 9-0 Long Beach Wilson junior varsity team. And he's got a player he thinks one day is going to make an impact at the varsity level.

Keith White, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound sophomore  transfer from Long Beach Poly who's a switch hitter with speed, has made quite an impression on Leveque. White can't play varsity this season because he didn't move, but Leveque believes White has as much potential as two other sophomores he once coached, Ryan Braun and Evan Longoria.

Baseball: Crenshaw shows off freshman contributors

March 30, 2009 |  6:20 pm

Crenshaw has three freshman starters who made major contributions Monday in helping the Cougars take over first place in the Coliseum League with a 9-3 victory over Fremont.

First baseman Keymon Thomas and catcher Skyler Blocker each had two hits. Third baseman Ron Miller had a two-run double. All are freshmen.

They combined with senior Kenji Corbisiero, who had three hits and threw a six-hitter. Crenshaw improved to 8-4 and 7-0 in league. Fremont dropped to 11-2 and 8-1.

Crenshaw is in City Section Division II this season. The City has revamped its playoff format, leaving most of the San Fernandoo Valley teams in Division I and creating a championship opportunity for everyone else.

I was impressed by the way both teams played with few errors. Neither is ready to beat a top Valley team, but both schools are showing improvement. Fremont had its own freshman standout in center fielder Carlos Garcia, who had a double and single, making him 22 for 39 on the season.
