Big week ahead in high school basketball

It’s an exciting week for high school basketball fans, with lots of rivalry games and battles for first place in league.

It starts Wednesday, with No. 12-ranked Sonora playing at La Habra in the Freeway League, with high scoring Jordan Sachs of La Habra trying to help his team pull off the upset. Sachs, headed to Westmont College, is averaging 28.0 points a game. Also on Wednesday, Taft plays at Cleveland in the City Section, Loyola is at Crespi, Long Beach Poly is at Long Beach Jordan and Capistrano Valley is at Tesoro.

On Friday, it’s game No. 2 in the Western League battle between Fairfax and host Westchester. If Westchester wins, the No. 1 seed for the City Division I playoffs goes to the Comets. There’s also a top girls’ game Friday at 7:30 p.m., matching Cajon and top-ranked Mater Dei at Mater Dei in the first day of the Nike Extravaganza.

On Saturday, Mater Dei is the place to be for the Nike Extravaganza. It starts at 8 a.m., with Sonora playing Colony. Los Alamitos plays Servite at 9:30 a.m., then comes Santa Margarita vs. Troy at 11 a.m., Riverside King vs. Ocean View at 12:30 p.m., Campbell Hall vs. Orange Lutheran at 2 p.m., Westchester vs. Seattle Rainier Beach at 4 p.m., Fairfax vs. Chicago Young at 5:30 p.m., Dominguez vs. Concord De La Salle at 7 p.m. and Mater Dei vs. Newark (N.Y.) St. Benedict’s at 9 p.m.
